MOST COMMON PROBLEMS WE FIX

1. Oxygen Sensor Replacements

Replacing an oxygen sensor is an extremely common repair in older cars. Your oxygen sensor is a vital component of your exhaust system which detects uncombusted oxygen in your exhaust. As your car ages, your oxygen sensor becomes worn, and is often due for replacement after 50,000 to 100,000 miles of use.

2. Catalytic Converter Replacements

As another component of your exhaust system, your catalytic converter neutralize hazardous compounds in your exhaust such as carbon monoxide. As a result, they also increase gas mileage and performance. Catalytic converters are designed to last the entire lifetime of your car, however, unattended repair issues in other components of the exhaust system can cause wear and breakdown to the catalytic converter.

3. Ignition Coil and Spark Plug Replacements (Both Together)

Ignition coils and spark plugs are another repair that is common on older cars. Your spark plugs send sparks to your ignition chamber, which allow the fuel to ignite and drive your engine. Failing spark plugs can have several distinct signs, which can help you diagnose this problem. The average costs for both of these repairs together is $390.17, but can cause much more expensive damage if not treated properly. Like with all problems, we recommend to have a mechanic at WESTNEDGE AUTO  inspect your car at the first sign of trouble - it could save you thousands!

4. Fuel Cap Replacements

You may think this entry looks silly, but a loose fuel cap is a frequent and inexpensive cause of a check engine light. A loose fuel cap can change aspects of the fuel tank that can cause low performance within the engine. And while being an inexpensive repair, it could cost you hundreds of dollars in terms of gas mileage over a short period of time. The average cost for a fuel cap is about $15, so consider yourself lucky if this is all your check engine light means!

5. Thermostat Replacement (ENGINE COOLANT SENSOR)

The thermostat in your engine measures your engine's temperature, which is used by your car’s computer to regulate performance. A faulty thermostat is another common feature of older cars, and is a common source of your check engine light. You shouldn’t ignore a thermostat repair - you car will either run under capacity or may damage itself under strain.

6. Ignition Coil Replacements

Coming in at #6 are ignition coil replacements, which may sound familiar as spark plugs and ignition coils came in at #3! Often, there may be problems with ignition systems that aren’t caused by faulty spark plugs, which only warrant the replacement of the ignition coils. Luckily for these folks, ignition coil replacement runs only $236.32 on average, almost $100 cheaper than the combination of spark plugs and ignition coil replacement.

7: Mass Air Flow Sensor Replacements

Your Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF Sensor) determines the amount of air entering your engine for your car’s computer to use when determining the optimal air-to-fuel ratio in your ignition chamber. MAF sensor failure can happen in cars of any age.

8. Spark Plug Replacements

Spark plugs, as evidenced by their #3 entry on this list, are a common replacement. Often, spark plugs are replaced in isolation from ignition coils, which grants them #8 on this list. Spark plugs, when repaired in isolation, often have their wires replaced, which can add to the cost.

9 and 10. EVAP Purge Control Valve / Solenoid

We put these together because they are often the same thing: your EVAP (evaporative emissions control system) purge control valve, or solenoid. This is the valve that controls your EVAP system, and allows it to function properly. Your EVAP system traps gas vapour that forms in your fuel tank and feeds it back into your engine to reduce harmful emissions and increase mileage, so it is a serious concern when it your EVAP system isn't working. This repair costs around $169.28 on average, and can clear up serious issues with your car.

Whether a big or small repair is necessary, our advice is to address it immediately. Car problems only get worse as time goes on, and it's important to address small problems as they appear in order to keep your car healthy for years to come.

11. BRAKE WORK

Some of the most common repairs that mechanics deal with have to do with the brake system. Wear and tear on brake pads is a repair that will happen more then once over the life of your vehicle. It is modestly priced repair. If it turns out it is disc, drum or rotor repair expect a higher bill, probably in the hundreds of dollars. Brake lines rarely need repair unless they are somehow cut.

12. Oil Changes

 – Oil changes should be done every 3 thousand miles to keep your car in the best possible running condition. It lengthens the life of the engine and having service records that show frequent oil changes can help the resell value of your vehicle.

13. Coolant System

– Radiator and cooling system flushes fall into this category. These repairs can range from fairly inexpensive to quite expensive depending on what the problem is.

14. Tires – Tire patches or complete replacements are a fairly common issue. A tire can leak or fail for a number reasons. The sidewall can split or it can pick up a nail or other sharp object. Repairs are pretty inexpensive but if the tire needs replacing the cost can go up.

15. Ignition System

– This includes the battery, starter and ignition. Battery repairs or charges are relatively simple. If the battery needs to be replaced there is a wide range of prices. If the starter needs to be repaired or replaced it will be a much more expensive repair.

16. Electrical System

– Electrical system problems include issues like blown fuses, lamp bulbs but can also include more serious issues. When it comes to the more serious electrical issues it is probably a good idea to let us deal with it. Simple repairs such as brake light bulb repairs can usually be done at home.

17. Fuel System

– Your fuel pump can become clogged if you drive your vehicle with less than 1/4 of tank on a regular basis. Fuel filters also need to be replaced on a regular basis. These repairs should be done by a professional.

18. Transmission

 – Transmission repairs are usually  complicated. It is best to leave these repairs to us at Westnedge Auto repair.

19. Exhaust System

 – Again, these repairs are not simple and most people would need a professional to do the work.

20. Air Conditioning System

–air conditioning system. Unless you have experience with these systems a professional should do the work.

21. Aftermarket alarm (removal)

If you try to install an after-market car alarm as a DIY job, the circuits that they adopt for use will draw power from elsewhere, causing problems to arise.

22. Exhaust gas recirculation valve (replacement)

To help your car stay as efficient as possible, this valve (as its name suggests) sends some of the exhaust back through the engine for another pass. The EGR valve lowers your emissions – what actually goes out your tailpipe. Note that issues with your EGR valve may also signal other areas of potential weakness. If you are having trouble with performance, it could be the valve; but the problem could also stem from the fuel filter or fuel pump regulator; spark plugs or its wires; or another engine sensor.

Manifold gasket (replacement)

This component will often develop leaks, which means that air or a blend of air and gasoline can get in between your engine parts, leading to corrosion. With leakage, your performance, emissions, and fuel efficiency suffer.

Mass air flow sensor (replacement)

You know how people are always saying you should replace your air filter? Well, that isn’t optional – and it’s clear when you look at the impact on the mass air flow sensor. When you don’t replace the filter regularly, you may compromise this component and its ability to gauge how much air is supplied to the engine

Bad Spark Plugs or Wires

Spark plugs are what create the power necessary to drive the pistons in the engine up and down. They require a small electrical charge in order to do so and if the plugs or the wires they are connected to go erode or fail in some other way the engine will not be able to properly operate. Signs of bad spark plugs include poor acceleration, rough idling or the vehicle engine cranking but not starting.

Blown Fuse

If you lose power in one system, such as your brake lights, radio or power windows you will want to check the fuse box. A vehicle’s electrical systems are all connected to the fuse box to ensure the right amount of power is getting to each system If a fuse goes fails, the system it is connected to will stop working. If this is indeed the only issue with the problem you’re having it is very inexpensive to fix.

Dead Battery

The battery is the source for all electricity in the car, so if you experience complete electrical failure the battery is likely at fault. If your car won’t start, and if your key is in the on position and no electronics work, your battery has passed on to the afterlife. But if it died due to leaving a light on or some other accessory running while the vehicle is not on for an extended period then it will just need to be jumped! Batteries do wear out over time and need replacement as necessary.

Bad Alternator

The alternator is hooked to a belt system that is spun by the turning of the engine, thus creating the power necessary to keep the battery charged. If the alternator breaks the battery will quickly be drained and all power will be lost.

If you’re having electrical issues with your car it is important to have the problem diagnosed and fixed as soon as possible so that you don’t end up with a more expensive repair. Our team of professional technicians excel at finding and repairing the most complicated auto electric issues! No matter what problem your car is suffering from our bumper to bumper auto shop will have you back on the road in no time.
